Canceling a build does not identify the state it left behind. This free Postline sample creates a private, disposable PostgreSQL 18 cluster and observes three controlled wait stages on a two-row table. It never connects to an existing database and does not listen on TCP.
What the recorded run shows
The included PostgreSQL 18.6 run completed 28 recorded steps. Each timeout was intentional. All state checks and the final unique rebuild passed.
| Case | Controlled wait | Error | Index after cancellation |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | A conflicting table lock before the catalog entry | Lock timeout, 55P03 | No index remained |
| B | An uncommitted writer before the first scan | Lock timeout, 55P03 | indisvalid=false, indisready=false |
| C | An older snapshot after both scans | Statement timeout, 57014 | indisvalid=false, indisready=true |
Case C's invalid unique index still rejected a duplicate insert with 23505. A same-name IF NOT EXISTS retry succeeded with a skip notice and changed neither flag. After releasing the blocker and dropping that specific lab index, the same duplicate probe succeeded; the script rolled that probe back. A fresh unique build then became valid and ready and rejected duplicates again. The original two rows remained.
These are observations from the captured run, not a promise that every cancellation has one of these outcomes. The original duplicate-key rehearsal remains a separate unchanged experiment.
How the sessions are coordinated
The script keeps a blocker connection open, waits for its actual idle-in-transaction state, then starts the build on a separate connection. In B and C it records the matching pg_stat_progress_create_index phase and virtualxid wait before collecting the timeout. Readiness polling has a deadline; it does not treat an arbitrary sleep as proof that a phase was reached.
Steps appear in command-start order. A blocker or build spans the inspection commands below it. A blocker's recorded SQL includes the later ROLLBACK that releases it. Every build uses a fresh connection, so its session settings disappear when the connection exits. Progress observations are snapshots, not a continuous trace.
Run it
Use Python 3 and PostgreSQL 18 server/client binaries on a Unix-like system, as a regular user. PostgreSQL installation instructions cover the prerequisites; this script installs nothing.
python3 rehearse.py --bin-dir /path/to/postgresql/18/bin --output my-observations.json
Omit --bin-dir when postgres, initdb and psql are on PATH. Relocated packages may also need --share-dir and a runtime library path. Do not use Python -O; assertions verify the observations. Existing output files are refused. Keep each run in a new file.
The script removes inherited PostgreSQL connection variables and connects only to its own private Unix socket. Its temporary directory is accessible only to your operating-system user. Handled execution failures stop clients and the local server; normal completion removes the cluster. An OS crash or uncatchable termination can leave local processes or files requiring cleanup.
Use the result in a change review
Record the exact object, error, observed phase, catalog flags and still-running sessions before deciding what to do next. An error code alone did not distinguish A from B. An invalid flag alone did not establish whether duplicate writes were accepted in C. That is the review lesson from this experiment.
The catalog documents validity for query use separately from readiness for writes. PostgreSQL also documents uniqueness enforcement before a concurrent build finishes. Those mechanisms explain why a failed build can still affect application writes; the captured insert is our direct evidence for this particular run. Catalog reference. Concurrent-build reference.
Cleanup here names only objects created in this disposable cluster. Do not transfer the drop command to production without reviewing the actual object, constraints, dependencies and availability requirements. This sample does not cover every failure stage, partitioned tables, replica behavior, resource pressure or production timing. The one-, three- and five-second settings make these controlled waits observable; they are not recommended service limits.

All 28 recorded steps
The rehearsal passed its expected checks. Some SQL commands deliberately failed; their exit codes and errors are part of the result. These are the original observations from the dated run above.
